The Challenge

Build a brand new high quality tattoo business site from the ground up with a high standard of branding

The Build

Behind the Gates Tattoo are a high quality, high end, creator of beautiful and striking tattoos, but they did not have a website to match the artistry of their creations. My challenge was to put together a highly functional and easy to use business website that did exactly that. This included artist profiles for all the company’s tattoo artists linked to their personal social media accounts as well as a main gallery.

The biggest developmental challenge faced by this project was fully integrating Instagram feeds for each of the tattoo artists employed by Behind the Gates Tattoo. Each artist proudly displays their work and we wanted to integrate this with the company, so prospective customers can not only see what they do, but follow and interact with them too. We also decided to make the company’s gallery page an integrated gallery plus Instagram feed.

This challenge was overcome by using a customised version of a php framework for the front end combined with a content management system. In terms of design, Behind the Gates Tattoo already had a logo in place, so we could build the overall design around it. This led to a design prominently focused around dark colours; especially greys. In terms of the site’s font, I used a unique font called Cinzel Decorative, which was inspired by 1st century Roman inscriptions yet still has a contemporary feel. In terms of images, all were either licensed on behalf of the client or supplied from artist profile images.

In terms of managing the Instagram integration, I used a premium service called Elfsight which enables seamless integration into php frameworks. I was then able to heavily customise the platform to fit our Behind the Gates Tattoo site design.
