Domain names

Sometimes brand-new businesses get in touch and they haven’t even got a name yet!

This name is key to your brand and most businesses choose a company name which they use for their website too – this is your domain name.

You can choose any name you like for your business (as long as it doesn’t already exist) but you may want to try and think practically. I always advise my clients to find something relevant to their business area, product or service. It is also useful to consider a domain name that includes your business’ keywords or search term.

You can also have more than one domain. One domain name can be used as your main website domain, and another could be used mainly for marketing purposes or for promotional emails etc. for example www.national-accident-helpline.co.uk also use underdog.co.uk for its TV adverts.

What even are Domain Names?

The Domain Name System (DNS) is simply the friendly, recognisable naming system for web servers or web pages. It’s a little like a telephone number and it is your chosen name for your website, under which the technical information, including your IP address, is hidden.

Tips for Choosing the Right Domain Name

Your domain name can be whatever you want it to be but keeping these tips in mind might help you find the perfect name:

1. Think about Spelling and Pronunciation

Many people get too clever with their business and domain names. Trying to be clever may result in an awkward and difficult to pronounce name, which in turn makes it less memorable. Of course typing or clicking a link isn’t the same as saying a brand name, but an awkward domain name will effect processing fluency. Your business is more likely to be remembered if the domain name is recognisable and includes words the regular person knows well.

2. Think of your Brand

You want a domain name which is fully brand-able and in keeping with your brand identity. Keep it free of hyphens and numbers as much as possible and think about the use of your keywords and additional element which makes it unique to your business.

3. Think Concise

The shorter the better is definitely the case when it comes to domain names. Again, this goes back to processing fluency – you want your website to be easily found and memorable. The fewer character in your domain name helps to ensure it doesn’t have to be shortened when used on social media or anywhere else you may share it.

4. Go .com (if you can)

You don’t have to have a .com (I don’t) but it is still recommended, especially with all the new TLD extensions. .coms have been around for over 20 years and they remain the most recognised and accessible TLD option out there. Again, from a fluency perspective when people think of visiting a website they immediately think of a .com so if you can get one – go for it!

5. Think Original

You need your domain name to be unique to you, which can be difficult as there are so many registered names now. If you can’t get exactly what you want or there is an existing business with a similar name, then it is worth having a rethink. The last thing you want is a trademark infringement to deal with.

Your domain name really does matter and can make or break your business. As I’ve said if you aren’t sure where to begin, please get in touch and I’ll do all I can to help you find the perfect name.
